Travel Period: March 31 – April 9, 2018
Searching for incredible accommodations in a foreign country can be terribly time-consuming, but it is actually one of my favorite parts of traveling!
I always get excited when I see various room layout from hotel booking sites like Agoda, where I can compare prices, land a great deal, and I can’t help but imagine staying at some of the nicest places.
I even dreamed of becoming an interior designer when I was a kid.
Soon after, I found myself overwhelmed by tests, exams, and other high-pressure attacks from the giant monster of the Taiwanese education system, and the dream faded away.
It was not until I discovered traveling in my early twenties that I was reminded of this distant, tiny childhood dream.
Anyway, let’s get back to the topic about where I stayed while traveling in the Netherlands.
I highly recommend the following 2 budget guesthouses, one located in Apeldoorn, a non-tourist city around an hour away by train from Amsterdam, and the other located smack-dab in the center of Amsterdam.
Both places were nearly perfect for me, my mom, and my sis to enjoy the beauty of this country — they are clean, quiet, near supermarkets and restaurants — so remember to book early! (better to do so right after you book your flight tickets)
1. Tai-Ho Lodge
This lovely place in Apeldoorn is run by a sweet Taiwanese lady, Joanna, who married a Dutch man, Marc, and moved to the Netherlands years ago.
Marc’s height (like 190 cm) was a little intimidating to me at first, but it turned out that he was a friendly guy, and we couldn’t have moved our heavy suitcases to the second floor without his help.
Here is the cost for 3 nights and 3 people: 348 EUR / around 12400 TWD
It was my mom who stumbled upon this B&B somewhere on the Internet and saw a lot of excellent reviews about the great breakfast Joanna made and how professional, passionate, and kind she was to offer guests plenty of useful travel tips IN CHINESE.
All the reviews were true!
During our stay at Tai-Ho Lodge, in the room next to us was a girl traveling solo, staying there for like 12 nights, and Joanna made 12 different breakfasts for her.
12!!! That was really insane.
And the breakfast would include some local food, so the three of us really looked forward to it every day.
I also appreciated Joanna’s help and advice on traveling, which not only relieved my mom’s anxiety, but also saved us a ton on travel costs and time to research where to go.
Sometimes, I thought my mom asked her too many questions, but she was patient enough to reply to one question after the other.
In addition, I remember the last day before we left for Amsterdam, we mentioned at breakfast that we wanted to go to Heineken Experience in the afternoon.
Joanna was like, “You should have told me earlier!”
While we were packing everything in our room, she booked us the tickets, each cost around 11 Euros.
It would have cost at least 18 Euros each if we had bought the tickets in Amsterdam, plus we would have had to waste time waiting in line at the ticket office!
Above was just one masterpiece of the discount queen.
Anyway, if you are going to stay at Tai-Ho Lodge, be sure to tell Joanna where you want to go in the Netherlands upon arrival.
Her service will exceed your expectations!
Here is another advantage of staying at the Tai-Ho Lodge.
We got to live like locals instead of being surrounded by a large number of tourists, which was quite annoying sometimes, and explore the tranquility of the small city and its surrounding attractions, such as Paleis Het Loo and De Hoge Veluwe.
Some of the restaurants offered only Dutch menus, which was impossible for me to read and order, but to look on the positive side, it was also one of the most exciting parts of traveling.
I didn’t know what I would get! (fingers crossed)
The first night we went out for dinner, we randomly picked an Israeli restaurant.
I was stumped when reading the Dutch menu, so I told the server, “I can’t read in Dutch. What would you recommend? ”
He then recommended a few dishes, explaining what the food was made of in English, but it was still tough for me to make the final decision.
I’m ALWAYS indecisive about what to eat.
“I guess I’ll just close my eyes and see where my fingers take us,” I said after pondering for a few minutes. He laughed.
Even though the Israeli food was a bit salty for us, we still enjoyed it that night!

2. Elf Studio
It wasn’t easy to find a private triple room that met all of my requirements in the heart of Amsterdam.
Most of the places were either a bit too far from the center, or slightly over my budget (below 4500 TWD per night).
The moment I decided to put out the white flag, I came across a local B&B booking website where I found Elf Studio.
I fell in love with this place at first sight for so many reasons.
It not only received a high rating of 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor, but it is also a typical Dutch house with EXTREMELY STEEP stairs! Cool!
Seriously, I would have rented the room on the top floor and climbed the stairs every day had it not been for our 3 huge, heavy suitcases. What a pity!
After telling my mom and sis about what I had just discovered, I immediately contacted the owner, Elske, and booked the room on the ground floor.
Total cost for 4 nights: 437 Euros / around 16000 TWD (100 Euro deposit paid via Paypal + 337 Euros paid in cash upon arrival).
Elske was a nice retired Dutch lady who had been running the place for years.
She lived on the second floor of the house and rented out the rooms on the first and the third floors.
As soon as I rang the doorbell, she opened the door with a warm smile and gave us a tour around the place.
The funny thing was that she forgot to tell us (probably the first Taiwanese or Asian guests she received) how to use the stove, so we ended up not being able to cook the food we had prepared for the first night.
The stove looked just like other normal stoves.
When I tried to switch it on, I expected to see flames coming up, but there was nothing.
Instead, I smelled gas.
So I sent a message to Elske to see if she could help us out.
After waiting for her response for about 2 hours, feeling in despair, I heard the door click.
“She’s back!” I exclaimed with a sigh of relief and rushed out of the room telling her what happened.
It turned out that after switching the stove on, we had to use the matches placed right next to it — light a match and then move it close enough to light the stove. Ha!
Elske kept apologizing for it while teaching us how to use the stove correctly.
She said it was very common to cook this way in the Netherlands, so she didn’t think to tell us at the beginning.
I didn’t blame her.
After all, experiencing cultural differences is what makes traveling so fun and attractive!
One more interesting thing about being on the ground floor.
Nearly half of the walls were made of transparent glass, which allowed me to see people passing by!
I even winked and waved my hands (in my imagination) at a few cute guys passing by while sitting on my bed.
However, since people could also see through the glass, we actually left the curtains closed most of the time. Hmmmm…
